Hauling Your Trailer in Winter

You have to be extra careful when you haul your cargo trailer in winter. Roads can be covered with snow and ice, which could send your trailer into a fishtail. Here at The Trailer Parts Outlet, we wanted to offer you a few tips on staying safe when the roads get slippery.

  1. Double check your tow vehicle

Your tow vehicle should be winterized. You should stay up to date on all maintenance. Regular car washes will prevent corrosion from road salt. Keep chains or tires in your trunk. Tell your mechanic you are a trailer hauler. That will help him make the best recommendations. Double check your brake lights and all electrical systems too.

  1. Make Sure You’re Using the Right Trailer

If you’re towing through winter conditions often, an enclosed trailer might be best for you. You can cover an open trailer too, but make sure your cover is secure. This prevents cargo damage, and cuts down on shifting, which can be hazardous. You want to follow the standard 60/40 rule for heavier cargo in the front of your trailer.

  1. Watch the Forecast

Winter months can have two sunny days followed by an ice storm. Watch the forecast for good opportunities to haul your trailer safely. If you can stay off the road during snowfalls and ice storms, you’ll be doing yourself, your trailer, and other motorists a favor.

  1. Take All Visibility Precautions

We mentioned making sure your lights work well. Add reflectors, flags and any visibility measures that seem necessary. Consider the bright white landscape when choosing options.

  1. Leave Space for Winter Trailer Breaking

You need extra stopping space when you’re hauling. You need extra stopping space for snowy, icy and slick roads. Make sure you’re using a safe following distance.

  1. Prepare for the Worst

Have an emergency kit with snow clothes, a hat, gloves, flares, hand warmers, a first aid kit, and more winter necessities if you get stranded by the side of the road.

  1. Follow Common Sense

Play it safe, use your common sense, and remember that unnecessary risks are never worth it.

Thank you, have a wonderful winter, and stay safe, from everyone here at The Trailer Parts Outlet.
